What's in those Supplements?
This is a good question to ask! Supplements are compounds that may be beneficial in the treatment of disease, but have not undergone the rigorous testing required for FDA approval. Some of these compounds have been shown to be effective in multiple studies, and may be recommended by the doctor to assist in treatment along with other therapies, such as glucosamine/chondroitin or fish oil for the treatment of arthritis. But what brands should you use, and is there a difference where you purchase it?
The answer is yes, there may be a difference. Because these compounds aren’t FDA approved, they also are not FDA regulated. This means that supplements aren’t required by law to contain what is claimed on the label, and may in fact contain other substances in addition to what is listed. For example, in independent testing, some supplements have been found to contain contaminants, lead, even other drugs in their formulations. For this reason, it is important to not only read the label, but also to only purchase from trusted brands and companies. There are independent companies that test various products and make the results available to medical professionals as well as the public, which can help you make informed purchases. ConsumerLab is an excellent source for this information.
It is very important that you discuss any supplements that you give your pet with your veterinarian. Some compounds or ingredients used for people may have different effects on pets, and can even be toxic. Others have the potential to interact with other medications that may be prescribed. Digestion and absorption of supplements or medications sometimes vary between humans, dogs, and cats, so a veterinary formulation may be recommended instead of an over-the-counter supplement.
It can be tempting to substitute a generic or cheaper brand of supplement for what the doctor recommends, but sometimes cheaper isn’t always equal. Please discuss any questions or concerns about supplements with the veterinarian, so we can work together to help your pet live the longest, healthiest life possible.
