Spay/Neuter

Animal shelters and animal control centers in the United States are overcrowded and thousands of cats and dogs are euthanized every year due to lack of space and adequate care.  The best way to control the animal overpopulation is by spaying and neutering all pets.

In addition to curtailing the large numbers of unwanted puppies and kittens, spaying and neutering pets reduces the likelihood of them developing medical conditions specific to reproduction as they age.

Unspayed female dogs and cats have an increased risk in developing
mammary tumors and a condition called pyometra, an inflammation and infection of the uterus which is fatal if left untreated.  Contrary to popular belief, there is no medical benefit for a female pet to go through one heat cycle or produce a litter before being spayed.

Male cats and dogs who are neutered completely erase their chance of developing testicular cancer and greatly reduce the possibility of problems associated with prostate enlargement later in life.  Neutering also generally lessens the tendency to
mark territory with urine and may curb aggression.

We recommend that all pets be spayed or neutered between four and six months of age, depending on breed and size.  These procedures are done weekday mornings, Monday through Friday, and most pets can go home later in the afternoon on the same day.  If you have any questions about the spay/neuter process feel free to ask your veterinarian or one of our staff members.
